A physiatrist, or rehabilitation physician,is a medical doctor. They are nerve, muscle and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move. They are able to accurately pinpoint problems, decrease pain, restore function and enhance performance - without surgery. The treatment is holistic as it addresses the entire person including their physical, medical, emotional, and vocational needs. Physiatrists play a significant role in helping treat disabling conditions due to low back, neck, shoulder and knee pain, sports injuries or more complex conditions: spinal cord injuries, arthritis, amputations, traumatic brain injuries and cardiac rehabilitation. Unfortunately, the common denominator among all of these problems is loss of function. The focus is on the development of a comprehensive program which would restore, maintain and optimize function and improve the quality of life to people with injuries and/or physical impairments and disabilities. This is achieved through the combined use of medications, special injection techniques, physical modalities, physical training with therapeutic exercise, movement & activities modification, adaptive equipment and assistive devices, orthotics (braces) and prosthetics. They also perform electrodiagnostics, such as needle electrmyographies (EMG) a nd nerve conduction studies (NCS), which are used to provide nervous system functional information for diagnosis and prognosis for various neuromuscular disorders. They work very closely with physical therapists and other health professionals to carry out individualized treatment plans to restore full function after surgery and minimize the chance of re-injury. Most importantly, physiatrists look to SAVE quality of lives.
