Managing pain after spinal cord injury (SCI)

Treating pain does not consist of an off the shelf solution. No one prescription bottle will be the cure all.  There are so many different causes of pain and not one treatment. Individuals dealing with pain after an accident will require a one-on-one pain management plan that will include a combination of drugs, physical therapy and other treatments.

Physical treatments and interventions

Physical therapy is used to treat musculoskeletal pain. Motion exercises and stretching helps alleviate pain associated with muscle strain and tension. The objective is to strengthen weak muscles through exercise and restore balance in painful joints, resulting in the reduction of pain.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)

This is a treatment method where electrodes are placed on the surface of a patients skin sending low levels of electrical current through the body. The current blocks signals from the areas of damage that are triggering a pain response.

Location Of Pain:

Shoulder, elbow, hand, hip, knee and ankle pain can be caused by overuse of the muscles simply from doing your daily activities. This type of pain can make it difficult for a person to walk safely and perform activities of daily living.

Back and neck pain are experienced by many people who have had surgery to fuse their spine due to the increased motion that occurs just above and just below the fusion.

Muscle spasm pain is caused when muscles are overly strained.
